MBP provided construction management services including on-site management and inspections, project documentation, and quality control and independent assurance testing. This significant project expanded both roads to four lanes to help ease Virginia traffic congestion between Suffolk and Chesapeake. It consisted of the complete reconstruction of approximately 1.5 miles of the existing two-lane road with a new divided highway with two lanes in each direction. The project was split between the cities of Chesapeake and Suffolk with two sets of plans and two different designers which required cohesive planning and execution between the two cities. Construction also included a bio retention basin and three stormwater retention ponds, drainage systems improvements, utility relocations, intersection improvements, a 10-foot, multi-use path, and landscaping enhancements.
The project was completed while working around a 90-inch live oak tree estimated to be more than 300 years old. Storm drainage improvements for the roadway were designed around preserving this magnificent tree. The project further protected this tree during construction by including an ISA Certified Arborist to care for and protect the tree. This tree is currently the fifth largest live oak tree in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
During construction, MBP reviewed all change order proposals and delivered an average of 18% savings through their evaluation process.
“MBP set a good example for completing a project this size on time. Appreciate everyone’s work on this important project working with two cities at the same time!”
