On behalf of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, MBP reviewed the contractor’s claim for additional compensation and time extension. The Virginia Dare Bridge is a new 8.4 kilometer structure that connects Roanoke Island and North Carolina’s Barrier Islands in Dare County, North Carolina. The project spans wetland areas near the shore on the east and west sides of the Croatan Sound, a navigation channel near the middle and the Sound itself. The bridge consisted of 268 post-tensioned spans, 24.2 meters in width. Bridge construction included concrete bearing piles, cast-in-place footings, columns and caps, upon which rested pre-cast concrete girders and cast-in-place decks.
