MBP’s Dominion Boulevard Improvement Project Selected as the APWA Mid-Atlantic Transportation Project of the Year

The City of Chesapeake Department of Public Works was presented this morning with the 2017 American Public Works Association (APWA) Mid-Atlantic Project of the Year Award for the Dominion Boulevard Improvement Project. The award was given in the Transportation, more that $75 million category at the APWA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Conference and Equipment Show in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The City of Chesapeake, Virginia, is the sole owner of this $345 million major corridor improvement project, which is also the largest locally administered project in Virginia’s history. The project consisted of replacing an existing two-lane draw span steel bridge with two parallel, two-lane, 95-foot high-rise fixed span bridges over the Elizabeth River and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The project also included widening the existing Dominion Boulevard from two lanes to four lanes along a 3.8-mile corridor, and installation of a state-of-the-art open road tolling system.

MBP provided turnkey construction management and inspection services on behalf of the City to include web-based project controls, on-site inspections, environmental compliance, shop fabrication inspections, material testing, public relations, budget management, CPM scheduling, and project closeout.

Project Statistics:

  • Approximately 10 miles of utilities have been relocated
  • 400,000 cubic yards of excavation
  • 1.2 million cubic yards of embankment fill
  • 5.8 million linear feet of wick drains
  • 65,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete
  • 2000+ pre-cast concrete piles (157,500 linear feet – over 30 miles)
