Reflections from CMAA Focus25: Why People and Relationships Still Drive Our Industry Forward

This year’s CMAA Focus25 Conference, held in Las Vegas, brought together construction management professionals from across the country for four days of learning, networking, and candid conversation about where our industry is heading. While emerging technologies and evolving delivery models remain important topics, one consistent theme continues to predominate: people and relationships are still the foundation of successful project delivery.

As long-term members, we have seen firsthand how the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) has evolved over the years. A generation ago, conferences like this focused more on the nuts and bolts—business practices, technical training, and hard skills. While those remain essential, today’s conversations lean more into team dynamics, integrated delivery methods, Lean principles, and the human element of construction. It’s no longer just about delivering a project—it’s about how we build trust, navigate challenges, and align diverse teams toward a common goal.

That theme came through in the sessions we participated in, including one that Chris facilitated, which posed the question: Is the owner the problem? The session emphasized that owners play a critical yet often overlooked role in a project’s success, with challenges like scope definition, internal alignment, and budget setting often impacting every phase of delivery.

Don participated in the “Great Expectations” closing plenary panel, which focused on aligning expectations between clients and construction management service providers across capital planning, project delivery, and team building. The discussion reinforced a key takeaway from the conference: relationships matter. Communication and shared understanding are critical, especially when delivering challenging programs.

One standout session spotlighted CMAA’s National Emerging Leaders Program, which continues to create space for rising professionals to shape the future of our industry. MBP’s Ryan Waldrop joined fellow emerging leader panelists to share how people-focused leadership, inclusive practices, and adaptable technology are key to solving long-standing challenges. The session was a powerful reminder that strong relationships—across generations, disciplines, and experience levels—are what truly drive innovation and lasting change in construction management.

Technology was, of course, a recurring theme. AI and enhanced data capture techniques are influencing how construction is planned, delivered, and optimized. However, even the most advanced tools are only as effective as the people using them. That’s why CMAA’s continued focus on relationships, trust, and communication is more relevant than ever.

One keynote speaker said it best: We all want to feel like an “everyday rock star”—and that starts by showing up with purpose, positivity, and the right mindset. At MBP, we’re proud to partner with CMAA and support initiatives that elevate our profession, develop future leaders, and create stronger project outcomes through stronger teams.

We look forward to continuing these conversations at the 2025 CMAA National Conference in Nashville!
